Definite Integrals

Evaluating definite integrals, applying the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and computing areas and related quantities.

These practice problems treat the definite integral as a limit of Riemann sums and as an evaluation by the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. You will set up a sum, pass to the limit, change variables inside definite bounds, and use symmetry so that a long antiderivative is unnecessary. The set is the bridge between finding an antiderivative and using the integral as a model. Solutions are written step by step.

Basic Definite Integrals asks for a Riemann-sum argument and for straightforward evaluations with the Fundamental Theorem. Substitution and Symmetry covers a change of variable with the limits rewritten, even and odd integrands on symmetric intervals, and periodic shortcuts. Special Techniques collects integrals that need a parameter, a reduction formula, or a comparison of two methods on the same integral.

If a substitution still fails before any limits are attached, start with the easier set, Integrals. After the evaluations here feel steady, Applications of Definite Integrals uses them for area, arc length, volume, and work. Double Integrals is the later step, once a definite integral in one variable is routine.
