Problem 90
Easy Vector Product

Compute (vec a×vec b)·(vec a×vec b) if |vec a|=|vec b|=1 and…

Compute $(\vec a\times\vec b)\cdot(\vec a\times\vec b)$ if $|\vec a|=|\vec b|=1$ and $\angle(\vec a,\vec b)=\dfrac\pi4$.

Explanation of Method

The scalar square of a×b.

Step 1: Direct

\[ (\vec a\times\vec b)\cdot(\vec a\times\vec b)=|\vec a\times\vec b|^2=\left(1\cdot1\cdot\sin\tfrac\pi4\right)^2=\tfrac12. \]

\[(\vec a\times\vec b)^2=\frac12\]

Step 2: Check with the Lagrange identity

\[ |\vec a\times\vec b|^2=|\vec a|^2|\vec b|^2-(\vec a\cdot\vec b)^2=1-\left(\tfrac{\sqrt2}{2}\right)^2=\tfrac12.\ \checkmark \]

$\tfrac{\pi}{4}$ $O$ $\vec a$ $\vec b$ $\tfrac{\sqrt2}{2}$
Unit vectors (drawn $2.5\times$ enlarged): the area is $|\vec a\times\vec b|=\sin\tfrac\pi4=\tfrac{\sqrt2}{2}$, and its square is $\tfrac12$.

Result

\[\boxed{\,(\vec a\times\vec b)^2=\frac12\,}\]
